Review : Ford v Ferrari ( Le Mans '66 )
What could you get when you mix a lot of adrenaline with the right amount of poignancy and smiles? I do not know about a lot other results but a mixture of above mentioned ingredients will surely give you "Ford v Ferrari", the movie.
Set up in the 1960's, it is a story about how Ford under the leadership of Henry Ford II, goes into a battle with the racing car pioneer Ferrari, headed by none other than the man, Enzo Ferrari, himself. Though, the story is about how Ford and Ferrari locked horns over the racing supremacy and egos, it mainly concentrates on the men Ford chose, to serve them and bring their pride back after their arrogance and ego gets rubbed by and humiliated by Ferrari. The only way they could get their pride back was by entering into a whole new battlefield, which was dominated by the cars of Ferrari - at the racing tracks of Le Mans! The man who got entrusted with that task was Carroll Shelby, owner of Shelby American and a former winner of Le Mans. Retired due to health conditions, Shelby brings in Ken Miles, as his first choice driver and also to help him build the dream race car, for Ford to go into the war against Ferrari.
The racing scenes in the movie is created with absolute perfection that it instills the thrill and fear in audience as if it is their dear one or they themselves are on the driving seat. That, in itself is a grand success. To get that feeling of adrenaline rush down to the viewers, all the while making their heart moving, is a hard task to achieve and through Ford v Ferrari, director James Mangold has achieved that task.
Much like Ford v Ferrari, it is a showdown for two men. Though, playing allies in the film, Matt Damon and Christian Bale indulges in a very healthy competition themselves on giving their best acting performance. Damon plays Shelby while Bale plays the volatile Miles. I have always believed that it is much tougher to play emotionally controlled characters since they are to provide less outburst of emotions while letting their viewers know what is going on through their minds just with expressions, the subtle ones. Damon and Bale did exactly that and often let you get inside their heads with a glance or unspoken words. I firmly root for both of them to get nominated for this year's Oscars. The soundtrack and bgm fits like a glove, especially to those racing scenes, making you feel your heart beat rising and stifled.
Ford v Ferrari, is a movie from the past but what exactly was required at the present times. Likeable to all kind of audiences irrespective of whether you are a automobile savvy or not. A text made through camera films on how to create a perfect feature film. It looks like we are in for a thrilling, close finish, with a lot of excellent movies making their way into the track as we are heading for the final lap of the year. It doesn't matter who wins the race, Ford v Ferrari will surely be one among at the podium.
