Review: Dune

The term masterpiece gets thrown around loosely these days, to an extent that even those works which linger around mediocrity get labeled a masterpiece. With Dune though, you will not have any uncertainties, for this one is certainly a masterpiece from a master craftsman. Dune is not Villeneuve's best work. It is not Incendies or Blade Runner 2049. Nevertheless, Dune is a cinematic experience on par with them. The visuals created by Greig Fraser are blended quite magnificently with Hans Zimmer's otherworldly score which holds you captivated to the screen for the entirety of its runtime. The casting is flawless. The only complaint anyone can have would be about the less screentime for Zendaya, as she is criminally underused in this. With the announcement of the second part, one can hope that there will be more of her Chani to this story. Timothee Chalamet proves his mettle once again and is undoubtedly on his way to be the next global superstar, if he isn't one already. With everything that's going on around the world, the underlying geopolitical allegorical theme makes it an all more important one to be told and heard. A flurry of nominations is expected at the next academy awards, this one is probably the best of the best of this year. A true masterpiece in every sense.
