Review : CODA

There are some movies which reminds you why you fell in love with this artform, melts your heart invigorating a strong feeling within and turn it into a valuable, unforgettable experience. Some movies reminds you the importance of this artform to the society as it takes on an important matter existing among us and reminds us of the importance and recognition it deserves. Those are the signs of a truly remarkable movie and CODA succeeds in both fronts equally.
CODA is acronym for children of deaf adults. That's the theme the movie is dealing with too. Ruby Rossi, a young highscool girl is the only person with hearing abilities in her family consisting of three other deaf people including her parents and her brother. She has to go with them to fish to make the ends meet while spending almost all of her time dedicated as a translator for them in order to protect them against the rudeness of the world. The dynamics of all of this takes a quick turn when she joins the school choir in the footsteps of her crush and announcing her desire to leave the hometown to follow her aspirations to be a singer. Whether her family ,who are oblivious to any form of sound, let alone her own singing, would react to this news kindly or not forms the crux of the story amid passing through some heavy emotional and good laughter. Sian Heder, the director has kept it close without ever straying away from the main theme. The audition scene, in particular, is a tearjerker compels you to have the perspective of the world of silence.
The casting is perfection at its best as she employed deaf actors to play the deaf characters making it all the more authentic and heartfelt. Emilia Jones is a revelation. If her performance in this one is any indication of her true potential, she has it all to go a very long way and carving a glittering career for herself.
Roughly nore than half of the duration movie takes place in silence , rightly so, and is very much successful in getting the message across to the audience while staying true to every bit to the original.
A must watch and a landmark of a movie. Thank you Heder to bring a change in the lives and perception of many.
