Review: The Whale

Of all the things that he could do with his talent and craftsmanship in this artform, Darren Aronofsky chose to mess with people’s minds and emotions. Nobody does it better than he to make people uncomfortable and wince and break down and leave behind as a mess through his movies.

Nevertheless, almost all of them are masterpieces, and “The Whale” isn’t any different. It tells the story of a man dealing with obesity and associated health issues along with a traumatized past and a chaotic present in his personal life and in his relationship with the people close to him. Aronofsky successfully brings in different layers to it including God, faith, honesty, sexuality, parenthood, etc.
Brendon Fraser has delivered the performance of his life and he deserves to walk away with the best actor award at this year’s academy awards. I truly hope this is the beginning of the phase in his acting career which would be similar to the "mcconaissance". It was pleasantly surprising to see Sadie Sink act out of her skin and vindicates the hype around her. Of all the talented “stranger things” kids she might come out as the most successful if she keeps up with this.
Forget the snacks and get the tissues when you sit down to watch this marvelous piece of artwork.
A24 hits gold yet again!!
